Botanical Gardens Plant Sale!

the birmingham botanical gardens had their annual plant sale last weekend. i went and spent way more money that i should have on some yummy herbs and vegetables. i saw bushes and flowers that i had never seen before. they also had tons of hybrids and varieties of veggies. it took place in an abandoned bruno's building. you can see how huge it was. that's only about a third of the building below too! i can't wait to plant all my goodies this weekend. the garden is calling.

Happy Earth Day!

so this earth day has started with a bit of drama. my husband called me just before 9 saying there was a demo crew waiting to tear down the garage in the lot next door. the lot that i just paid for yesterday! after a few frantic phone calls and help from a co-worker i have 24 hours to get the demo stopped instead of the 20 minutes i had this morning. who does demo work on earth day?! i mean come on...i'm trying to RECYCLE this structure.
____________________________________________________________________________________
one of my resolutions this year was to be more self-sufficient and less of a consumer. i finally got the hybrid car that i've been drooling over since they've existed. i recycle and make my own laundry detergent and cleaning products. i'm planting a huge organic garden in my new lot next door, cut out paper towels and paper napkins, and am using recycled content toilet paper. also, in my work practice i'm trying to incorporate more eco-friendly finishes and educate clients on the advantages of doing so. oh, and i turn all the lights off behind my husband. ha.

what have you been doing to be more green? i want to know your tips and advice.

Architecture: Didden Village

awesome. i think this is one of the most inventive and wonderful layouts for a home. read below from the original post on archdaily for more information Didden Village in Rotterdam, Netherlands- by architects MVRDV.

The bedrooms are positioned as separate houses, optimising the privacy of every member of the family (one for parents and two adjoining children’s rooms). The houses are accessed via a suspended spiral staircase from the loft-like living room. The two spiral stairs to the two children’s houses coil around each other to form a double helix stairs. The houses are placed on the large rectilinear roof surface in such a way that they form a small number of outdoor spaces (houses, squares, streets and lanes) that make up a rooftop village.

Have a good weekend & week recap!

(via)
i married a man that was born and raised in alabama. in this state you are either an alabama or an auburn fan. period. although i was raised in chicago and tampa and have my sports teams that i cheer for, (da bears! cubbies! and bucs!...yes, i like sports) i married an alabama fan. i didn't think i would like college ball as much as pro, but i have to say i've become hooked over the last 7 years. tomorrow we are driving over to tuscaloosa (45 minutes from here) to watch their annual a-day game. it will be on espn! that's a first. i'm excited to see the new line up. i guess it's about the equivalent of liking a baseball team and going to their spring training. i'll try to post some pics next week. fun fun fun! it should be a full day of yelling, drinking, and general debauchery. i'm very much looking forward to it.

DIY: Reusable Sandwich Wrap

i was talking to my friend monica of of paper and things about diy projects yesterday. i've been trying to be green around the house...using green toilet paper, no more paper towels, replacing paper napkins with cloth napkins and my last qualm is a way to to get rid of ziploc bags in a less bulky way than tupperware which she has a problem with as well. i assume others have this same dilema. if so, check out this fun diy reusable sandwich wrap via of paper and things...
