My Favorite Part: Nikolaus Mimikakis
Nikolaus Mimikakis moved into this beautiful home in Norwood, a historic Birmingham neighborhood with a strong revitalization movement happening now, a few years ago. Not only is he part of the Historic Norwood movement, but he also runs Mimikakis Remodeling L.L.C. He's worked hard to maintain and restore this home's original beauty which I think he's done a fantastic job with. See below for what he likes the most about this historic beauty.
I love the large open rooms with huge windows that let sunlight pour in through diamond shaped sashes to show off the glass curios, wood columns, built-in seating area, coffered ceiling and alabama white marble fireplace. The fireplace was unfortunately painted in the 30's but it was done tastefully by skilled artists. There is a gorgeous door with beveled leaded glass that leads to sunroom with windows that have large sills to place plants on. The house has a great flow and brings people together in the open rooms. Construction of the house incorporates materials found locally such as, white oak floors, heart pine trim, alabama white marble and a field stone foundation. This type of stone is prevalent in the south and is not often seen in other ares of the country.
So, in other words, what I love about my house most is the architecture, floor plan and the composition which were heavily influenced by the Arts & Crafts Movement at the turn of the century.
(If you live in the Birmingham area, Nikolaus is looking for a roommate. Comment or email me with any questions/inquiries)

Accessory: Poppies for Grace
Sara Dickins and Alana Waterson started Poppies For Grace as two shy, sweet best friends over ten years ago in Melbourne, Australia. Their treetop hideaways and adventures together have led to a world of fairy-tale and legend, illustrations being born from memories of stories. “The world is a great dance, and we like to think our paper and drawings are little songs amongst all the beauty.”
Poppies for Grace is the result of a lot of love, and designed to have the same effect as a perfect cup of tea would on a cold morning. With a great range of gift cards and tags, invitation pack, lolly bags, writing sets and book plates, Sara and Alana also lend their skills to custom graphic work, ranging from wedding invitations to corporate identities.
Thanks, Kate!

My Favorite Part: Orenda + Todd
The lovely and talented Orenda Fink lives in Omaha, Nebraska with her husband Todd. Both are amazing musicians and create music in their own studios at home. You may know Orenda Fink as a solo artist, and from her bands Azure Ray, O+S, Harouki Zombi and Todd Fink as a solo artist and from his band The Faint. Together they have created a beautiful home in which to create.

right now my favorite spot in our house is this little corner with our new (to us) french provincial style baldwin spinette piano. i don't play piano that well, but it's still a good writing tool and a true object of beauty. i have a perfect view of it from the living room, so it inspires me to get up off the couch and write something!

My Favorite Part: Amy Pleasant
Amy Pleasant, one of my favorite artists, has such a beautiful home. You might remember this post of her opening at The Contemporary in Atlanta. See more of her work here and keep reading below to see the favorite part of her home and why.
One of my favorite rooms. When I moved back from Chicago I really wanted a fireplace even though in Birmingham you can rarely use it. I have actually had fires and opened the windows just to be able to enjoy it without being too hot. It is also the room where everyone gathers and is furnished by hand-me-downs from family and family friends and each piece reminds me of them.
This piece of furniture was given to me by my great Uncle Pat Pleasant. He was an artist in NY and he was one of the most important and influential people in my life. He brought this settee back with him from France in pieces and gave it to me as a "project". He is no longer with us so I treasure it all the more.
I wanted pattered walls in my dining room so I made a series of lino cuts inspired by a bracelet I wore in high school. Each image was a charm on the chain.
The original bathroom tile on the floor.
