Furniture: Knoll Atlanta Showroom

i had a great time friday at the atlanta knoll showroom! i got to see some of my favorite pieces of mid century modern furniture mixed with a few new favorites. the knoll crew was most hospitable by giving us a ceu credit course on design in the workplace, feeding us well, liquoring us up and then putting us up in a super fantastic hotel. the womb chair above is my absolute dream chair. i want it in red! check out a few pics i snapped of some fun furniture while touring the showroom! how cute is that baby diamond chair?! i almost cried when i saw it!

Etsy Lunch Hour: Knoll

diamond chair note cards

i should be at knoll by now checking out chairs like these which annacote so beautifully screenprinted.  (i set up this post last night)  i have a pair of diamond chairs (above) that my husband found at the thrift store almost 8 years ago.  we paid $1.98 each for them.  later he found an ottoman to go with them at an antique store.  below is the barcelona chair that i adore.  i have the barcelona day bed that we also got at an antique store for not much money either.  the diamond chairs are definitely my favorite thrift store knoll find, but my vintage knoll credenza is my favorite yard sale knoll find.  6 foot knoll credenza with sliding doors, leather pulls and in great condition for $40!  i still can't believe it.  oh, knoll...you are my friend!

New at Urban Outfitters!

normally i would have waited until monday to post these new lights from urban outfitters, but i am thinking of them not only as a light, but as art. how awesome are these? I seriously love the "&"! i think it would be so sweet to have one of these as ambient light in any room of the house or it would be awesome to have a mural on a wall with these incorporated into the design.

Windowboxes Purple or White?

it's almost time to replant my window boxes. last year i had purple petunias. although they were a pain to keep alive in our 100 degree summers, they were beautiful and can take the western exposure like a champ. i'm thinking about doing the purple petunias again, but i'm also torn after i saw some really pretty white ones too. check out my horrible photoshop attempt at showing the two options. what do you think? purple? white? purple and white? another type flower all together? oh, and there's a large white dogwood in my front yard if this helps with the imagery.

DIY: Rain Barrels

we've been working on tilling a huge garden (30' x 30'!) next door. i've always thought it would be fun to have a vegetable garden and this is the first spring that we will be in the house. we moved in last summer and had a few little vegetable plants that the previous owners planted, but it wasn't much. this year we are doing it right with lettuce, cucumbers, bell peppers, tomatoes, beans and blueberries. i'm so excited! we've been talking about doing a rain barrel for a while to help water the garden too. well, two weekends ago my husband took it upon himself to make it happen. we went to the coca-cola bottling company and bought (2) 55 gallon barrels for $5 a piece (thanks monica for the tip!), rinsed them out and headed to home depot for some connectors and bits and pieces.

first, a level ground area was dug and concrete blocks were used for the foundation.
then, holes were drilled into the side of the barrel to line up with the flanges. a rubber washer was inserted inside the flange. another flange goes inside the barrel as well. we had to cut half of the top of the barrel off to get an arm in.

tighten the flanges together, caulk in between flanges if you want to. we didn't, but i've heard others have. 2 short 1/2" pipes with a spout in the middle link the barrels together so that they fill at the same rate. we used jb weld and caulk around the bolts on the outside of the flange to make sure it didn't leak and a flexible hose was attached to our downspout to divert rain into the barrels. we ended up taking out a few of the middle concrete blocks, which weren't needed, so that we could just put a 5 gallon bucket underneath to pour water into. all 110 gallons filled with the first rain! eureka it worked!

Green Content: Dutchtub

my husband was just talking about this tub the other day and i realized that i had it bookmarked to blog. i think the dutchtub might be the cutest mobile tub ever! plus, it's completely off the grid. i know some of you are thinking "but you have to burn wood to make it work". well, yes, that is a little less green, but it uses no power, no plugs, and no gas. you can plop it on top of your car and take it into the woods or throw it in the backyard and use leftover firewood or recycle old furniture to burn in this bad boy. i'm smitten. Interior: Williamsburg, Brooklyn Home

this post really makes me miss my loft. i lived downtown for 4 years in a gigantic 1700 sq ft loft of white walls, concrete floor, no doors, and exposed brick. i love how this interior is stark yet fun. read below from the original post via design*sponge

swedish designer cathy gedda westrell and her fiance erik. their williamsburg, brooklyn home in is a small, restored bakery and the bakery was actually active up until the construction started. both being from sweden (a country that’s dark 7 months of the year) they knew they needed something white and airy. the result is fantastic, and i love some of the creative solutions they’ve come up with for their home (especially the knobs on the dresser and photo wall of friends). click here for more, full-sized images, and here for more of cathy’s work. For Sale: Idea Home of the Year 1955!

i recieved a sweet email on facebook letting me know of a little gem of a home for sale here in birmingham. it was the idea home of the year in 1955 for better homes and gardens. here is what the granddaughter of the owners had to tell me about this fantastic one owner home in vestavia hills. did i mention that i would love to be the second owner?! i can dream right?
The architect of the house is world-renowned, Bham native, Hugh Stubbins. The house is mostly in its original state. Unfortunately, I don’t have lots of good photos but I have uploaded a few to flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/carolineatl/) I posted a few images from the Sept 1955 issue of Better Homes & Gardens magazine that features the house but it is hard to see on flickr. The house has had little done to it over the years, which is good because it is mostly in its original condition - can’t get much more mcm than this house! However, it needs some TLC to bring back its glory. My grandparents purchased the house fully furnished back in 1955. Some of the original furniture can be included in the house sale.

Before and After: Brent & Angie's Kitchen

(before)
a few weeks ago i went up to nashville with my husband to visit the brother and sister-in-law. they bought the sweetest little house and have just not felt it really reflected their style. our trip started as a simple "let's pick some paint colors and help you paint while we are here" and has evolved into brent and angie completely redoing the kitchen. they replaced the counters with black solid surface counter, new faucet, new hardware, all new lighting, painted the cabinets white, and replaced all of the appliances except for the fridge. the kitchen is sherwin williams ruskin room green and the living room is sherwin williams interesting aqua. the two colors really look beautiful together and brent and angie are so excited about the "new" kitchen.
