Etsy Lunch Hour: Cedar Waxwing

Cedar Waxwing in Snow greeting card by scramp22

i was sitting in my sun porch this weekend which over looks my muscadine vines when i noticed there were tons of birds jumping around the branches and eating the berries. i grabbed my binoculars (strategically placed for bird watching) and saw the most beautiful birds that i have ever seen....cedar waxwings. i grabbed my laptop and searched for "red tip wing" birds. they have the sweetest little red tipped wings and yellow tipped tails with a head much like a cardinal except they are more brown with adults having pale yellow bellies. they are now my favorite birds. i read that when they are courting each other they push little gifts back and forth like berries and bugs. sigh. how cute is that?! check out these etsy artists that also love the sweet cedar waxwings.

Architecture: Rooftop House

this tiny little rooftop home, via pierre-jean verger's site, probably didn't look like much to begin with and from the outside still does not look like it would be amazing inside. i absolutely adore this little abode and think there is something romantic about living on a rooftop in a little cube.

Succulent Weekend!

my husband was so sweet and took me out to get a bunch of succulents this weekend. i had two planters that i had been dying to do a little succulent garden in. i think they turned out so pretty! above/below is perle von nurnberg, partridge breast, burrito, key lime pie, crossula perforata variegata, and cocoon plant.

above/below is anacampseros rufescens, fingers jade, cocoon plant, burrito, window haworthia, and medicinal aloe.

oh, and below is string of pearls. love them!

Interior: SAS hotel Copenhagen

i adore the interior of the sas hotel in copenhagen. arne jacobsen is one of my favorite designers. he designed the exterior facade of the hotel and throughout the entire hotel you will find arne's egg and swan chairs. the color palette is phenomenal and it doesn't hurt that i have a weakness for danish modern design.
Room 606 is the only hotel room with the original Arne Jacobsen décor from July 1960 when the hotel first opened its doors.

Etsy Lunch Hour: Felted Plant Cozies

i love these felted plant cozies and vase from papaververt on etsy!
Hand crocheted with an 85/15 wool/mohair blend, this catch-all/plant cozy was wet felted, dried around a mold to create its shape and then steam blocked. The process of felting causes it to shrink into a tight fabric.Perfect as a catch-all for your knick-knack stash or for holding a 4" potted plant. A shallow plastic liner comes with purchase to catch any drips.

Green Content: Living Moss Carpet

what do you guys think about a real living moss carpet for your bath mat? i found this little guy on inhabitat via yanko design. my first thought is that my feet will get dirty after i just washed them...but will they? then, i wonder what it feels like on your feet. i bet it's really nice. last, i wonder what my dogs would think of it. are they really bad enough to try to eat, scratch, and/or pee on it? i'd like a trial version please.

This Moss Carpet by Nguyen La Chanh brings the outside indoors in an unconventionally natural way by placing it underfoot. The lush green lawn thrives in humid environments, which makes your bathroom a perfect place to grow.

Artist: David Cole's Knitting Machine

the knitting machine by david cole is a large scale art installation using two back hoes and 20 foot knitting needles to actually knit an american flag. how crazy cool is this?! his other work is pretty incredible too including a fiberglass woven bear that is 14 feet tall and a blanket made from knitted electrical cords. check out more of his work here.

Madberries Giveaway!

Okay, so I have two exciting things in this post. First, yesterday I got to see the new Matte Stephens pillows from urban outfitters...in person! my boss got two of them to give to the herman miller reps for taking us to atlanta two weeks ago. all I have to say is they are so sweet, so soft and cuddly and so adorable. it looks like matte painted directly on the fabric...it's so perfect. pictured above is one of the pillows in my aeron chair at work. Second, madberries (my new daily addiction!) is doing a giveaway for two of these pillows (pictured below). So go sign up to win or go to your nearest u.o. and see for yourself what i am drooling over.

Have a good weekend & week recap!

i hope you all have a happy valentine's day and/or good weekend. we don't do much for v-day...usually just cook a nice dinner and enjoy being together. i don't require roses and chocolates. although....pictured above is a bouquet i put together at the annual flower swap that office environments hosts with other reps in town. everyone brings a small bunch of flowers and they are all combined with everyone elses flowers. then, you walk around all of the containers full of flowers and piece together your own bouquet. everyone's is different and gorgeous. do you like mine?

Artist: The Contemporary with Amy Pleasant

while in atlanta last week i was so fortunate to get to go to an art opening for my friend amy pleasant. the show was at the contemporary (which by the way is a fabulous space!). these two large murals make up her show "the bed, after lautrec" and i fell in love. her work is always so amazing.

check out my friend monica's post over at of paper and things that she did earlier this week on amy!
you can see from this photo the scale of the work...pretty amazing. oh, and that's amy there in the white sweater!

Architecture: High Museum of Art

the high museum of art in atlanta is a beautiful building which i got to visit last Thursday. the original building was designed by richard meier in 1983 (above left and below right) and in November 2005 the high added an expansion to the museum designed by renzo piano. (above right and below left)
Piano's design of the new Wieland Pavilion and the Anne Cox Chambers Wing features a special roof system of 1,000 light scoops that capture northern light and filter it into the skyway galleries. (detail below right)

the natural light is so beautiful in the galleries and adds dimension and interest to an otherwise stark white room. i am absolutely in love.

Furniture: Geiger

Thursday and Friday of last week I was in Atlanta with the Herman Miller rep, a sales rep from the Herman Miller dealer in town, my boss and the other designer I work with. We had an absolute blast visiting showrooms, eating fantastic food, staying in a beautiful hotel in Buckhead and seeing some amazing art. I have dedicated most of the posts this week to cover our fun adventure....starting with our first stop, the Geiger showroom and manufacturing plant. Geiger is a Herman Miller owned company. Above is an amazing bench that i wanted.

i love how they displayed all of their finish options as art on the wall.

first sight coffee table that is in the same family as the bench i want. drool.

the plant tour was actually fascinating and i was not sure how much photography i could actually take. our tour guide walked us through the entire process of making a piece of furniture. i took this photo of piles of veneer. i had never seen veneer in it's natural state before being adhered to furniture. i think this is the maple up close and walnut behind it. so cool.

upholstered version of the first sight coffee table above.

this workstation made me happy because the work top slides left and right on a rail system and the blue in the storage units is actually painted wood. the interior of the overheads is blue too. the picture doesn't do it justice...much cooler in person.
these scissor chairs in the lobby are an oldie but goodie. i think they have had them in their line since the 70s and reissued them about 10 years ago.

Accessory: Seda France Candles

i think candles are an important accessory to have in a home. they add a nice ambience to a space, make everything smell clean (even if it isn't) and just look pretty. plus, to me it is a nice way to save on electricity and i get to play with matches. seda france has got to be my favorite brand of candles ever since a friend gave me the japanese quince (pictured below). it is my favorite candle scent ever! all of the other scents i have smelled from seda france are so lovely too. i love the packaging of the bon chic style above. aren't they adorable?!

do you ever wish that you had a smaller house in the winter so your heating bill would go down? at the same time, have you ever wished you had just a little more space? well, this house has both. dragspelhuset, a tiny cabin in the woods made from western red cedar shakes, is completely off the grid, no electricity, heat, phone, or running water and was built by hand by the architects themselves with help from friends over four summers. the house is 775 sq ft total with the additional 300 sq ft extended. it freaking unfolds people!

Finish: Mario Modular Floor Tiles

(via)
okay...i admit it. i really like video games, but i really love original nintendo video games best. i have the system, gun, power pad, and about 15 or 20 games including the gold zelda, mike tyson's punchout and of course all 3 mario brothers games. i had to move the system to the bedroom when we got a wii and ps3. i really need to get it all hooked up very soon so i can lay in bed and play the original mario or mario 3. sorry, mario 2 sucked. i never thought about mario modular floor tiles, but aren't they awesome. i almost wish my bedroom had hardwoods so i get these. a bunch of little brick ones together would be so cute and you wouldn't even know they were mario related. do you want some? do you need some? do you wanna buy some? go here. each 40cm x 40 cm (approx 15.5" x 15.5") floor tile is $23.
