DIY: Readymade Periodical Table

Readymade is my favorite magazine and in each issue there are fun DIY projects that I always want to try for myself. This project reuses Ikea's Mackis magazine files to create a periodical table. So cute!

Todd Oldham
There are a lot of different magazines out there, and they come in as many shapes and sizes as they do topics. Whether you tend to hoard your issues forever, or just give them a quick flip, here’s a great way to store them.
THE INSPIRATION Artists Jeff Carter and Clay Ketter have been reimagining Ikea’s ubiquitous materials for quite some time. Today, more and more people are using bits and pieces they find at the Swedish retailer as raw material for creative projects (see ReadyMade’s Expedit Challenge on page 40). I followed suit and found the key ingredients for this filing system.
MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION First I painted 11 Mackis magazine files in a fun palette and set them aside to dry. Next I cut the base and back out of ¾” plywood. The back measures 25 ½” x 25 ½”, and the base is 25 ½” x 9 ¾”. If you don’t have a table saw, your local lumberyard can make the cuts for you. I attached the back to the base by screwing up through the base with 2 ¼” drywall screws. For extra reinforcement, you could use angle brackets with ½” screws. I thought the Sigfrid shelving brackets would make nice legs, so I attached them to the underside of the base. The front legs face forward and the back legs face out to the sides so the unit can sit flush against a wall. With the unit on its back, I arranged the 11 magazine files in a grid and affixed seven of them to the back piece with wood glue and ½” screws with finishing washers. I left the four bottom ones loose so they can be pulled in and out, which is great for those magazines you return to over and over.

Barcode Clutch

The barcode clutch from Ecoist at Reform School has been marked as a favorite of mine for some time now. I love that it is made from recycling candy wrappers, soda bottles, and food containers. The clutch is available in three sizes small (coin purse), medium (phone & keys) and large (clutch purse). Plus, Ecoist will plant a tree for every bag that is sold!

I had to repost this interior when I saw it. First, because I love Grain Edit. Second, because I am a sucker for mid-century modern. Third, because it rocks. Grace at Design*Sponge reposted this from More Ways to Waste Time...two of my other favorite sites. Dave, of Grain Edit, his wife Liz and their cat Twig live in this fantastic modern home in Oakland. Read the entire article here. It's a fantastic read but I'll just leave you with the photo highlights.

Architecture: Casa Tolo

I like to call this house the "slope house". Alvaro Leite Siza Vieira designed this house "instead of fighting the natural environment, the architect embraced it using the slope as the home's main characteristic. the home begins at the top of the hill and slowly reveals itself as you descend down the outdoor staircase. the home was designed as a vacation home for the architect's cousin, wife and children. despite the familiar connection the home was built on a tight budget of 150,000 usd. the various rooms are divided among the levels, each one even has its own patio space. despite the frontal exposure to the hot sun, the residence is cooled by the earth which surrounds it on three sides." This house is unbelievably cool and innovative!

I am so in love with this cloud light by Frank Gehry it is not funny. This pendant is really more of an art piece than a light source to me and is massive, measuring at 78" wide! What a beautiful statement piece this could be.

DIY: Platform Bed with Storage

I'm always looking for fun DIY projects for around the house. I really like the thought behind this platform bed with built-in storage and can see this in any studio apartment or loft.

"David tells us his DIY platform bed project isn't yet complete, but we think he's done such a spectacular job with his bed/storage to this point, we wanted to go ahead and share what's he's completed thus far...

The bed frame is a platform filled in with sheet-rock compound.
"...there's a few things left to do to the bed before it's complete. I plan to build a shoji-like (probably more industrial than traditional) screen/room divider in front of the bed. I'm also planning to add a few coats of polyurethane to the chipboard top. And then there's the 3 foot deep drawers that slide into the side."

Finish: Weitzner Enduit Collection

I just met with the Weitzner rep and she showed me these beautiful plaster wallpapers that blew me away. The pictures do not do it justice. This is a wallpaper with a stenciled plaster applied to the paper. It goes up just like wallpaper and you can paint it or leave it in the raw. The imperfections of the plasters are gorgeous and really looks like you spent a lot of money to have a plaster artisan come out and do your walls for you. Love, love the border. (pictured above)

3form has come out with a new product called Wovin Wall. Basically it is a metal framing system that mounts directly to the wall with small 3form panels that insert into the system. The small panels are removable and available in multiple colors, wood veneers, and even custom prints. This wall can be used on ceilings as well to add a punch of texture. I love the effect and think this would be awesome in a number of applications.

Interior: Falling Garden, San Staë church

"Falling Garden, San Staë church on the Canale Grande, 50th Biennial of Venice, 2003

The Doge (Mocenigo) needed a church in order to have a monumental tomb built for himself, the church (San Staë) needed a saint so it could be built, the saint (San Eustachio) needed a miracle to be pronounced a saint, the miracle needed a stag in order to be seen, and we built the garden for the stag. The visitors lie on the bed above the doge’s gravestone, and the garden thinks for them." (via architectradure)

I think it's beautiful and whimsical! I adjusted the translation slightly so it would read better. I think every adolescent girl has dreamed of a room like this.

Le Corbusier's Modulor Measuring Tape

Vitra has reissued Le Corbusier's Modulor measuring tape circa 1945. What is The Modulor? Some think of it as the most important modern attempt to develop a mathematic measurement system based on the proportions of the human body. Le Corbusier developed the Modulor in the same tradition of Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man in an attempt to discover mathematical proportions in the human body that would improve the appearance and function of architecture. The system is based on human measurements as well as the double unit, the Fibonacci numbers, and the golden ratio. Le Corbusier described it as a "range of harmonious measurements to suit the human scale, universally applicable to architecture and to mechanical things." Critics, however, have pointed out a number of concerns with his system. The height of the figure appears to be arbitrary and was perhaps chosen for mathematical convenience. The female body, in the words of reviewer Michael Ostwald, "was only belatedly considered and rejected as a source of proportional harmony". The system bears no relationship to actual anthropometric observations. But, that said, the Swiss take their native son's invention very seriously—there is a picture of it on the 10 CHF (Swiss Franc bill).

During his lifetime only a few samples of this measuring tape were created—for his personal use in the design of building projects. An original artifact in the holdings of the Foundation Le Corbusier served as the model for this new edition by the Vitra Design Museum. Makes a great gift for an architect or design enthusiast. Pick it up right here ($76). (via DESIGNwatcher)

Artist: Amy Ruppel

I really love Amy Ruppel's work. The beeswax/resin coating makes the art look soft and so beautiful. According to her bio on Velocity:
The medium is beeswax layered under and over digital prints on paper derived from her photography, then cut into rounded shapes and completed with drawings etched into the wax. Since the surface is smoothed with the flame of a propane torch, Amy Ruppel describes her process as “painting with scissors and fire instead of a brush.”

Architecture: "Bird's Nest" Olympic Stadium

For the past few weeks my architectural posts have been Olympic and China related, first, with the water cube and then the performing arts center. But, I have saved the best for last. I am sure that most of you have seen an image of this magnificent $400 million structure....the Olympic Stadium, dubbed "the bird's nest". This year's Olympics have really upped the anty for Olympic architecture and I can only hope the cities after can keep up. I was in Atlanta this week and drove by Olympic park and felt so uninspired. Is it that the U.S. has such stricter codes for building construction or are we just lame?

Interior: Museum Subway Station, Toronto, Ontario

I am getting excited about my trip to Toronto next month and came across this amazing Diamond and Schmitt Architects’ redesign of the Museum Subway Station on the Toronto Transit Commission’s University subway Line. Architecture Now has an amazing article here about this project and I will quote from it below.

"The acclaimed Canadian firm’s new design of Museum Station re-imagines the subway platform as a hypostyle Hall supported by archeologically inspired columns. With a major cultural renaissance taking place above-ground through the renovation and expansion of the Royal Ontario Museum and the George R. Gardiner Museum, the redesigned and revitalized Museum subway station reflects this new energy and spirit underground.

Based on artefacts from the Royal Ontario Museum and the Gardiner Museum, five column designs are repeated throughout the station’s platform representing Canada’s First Nations (“The Wuikinuxv First Nation Bear House Post”), Ancient Egypt (“The Osiris Pilaster”), Mexico’s Toltec Culture (“The Toltec Warrior”), China’s traditional culture (“The Forbidden City Columns”) and Ancient Greece (“The Doric Columns”). Updated ceiling lighting and a new monolithic wall finish create a contemporary backdrop for the column designs. The new station design helps to orient subway riders to city above, providing visual clues about the activities above ground."

Architecture: The National Center for the Performing Arts (China)

China has really stepped up it's game to host the 2008 Olympics....well at least architecturally speaking that is. The National Centre for the Performing Arts, formerly known as the National Grand Theatre, and also described as The Egg, is an opera house in Beijing, China. The Centre, an ellipsoid dome of titanium and glass surrounded by an artificial lake, seats 6,500 people in three halls and is 200,000 m² in size. It was designed by French architect Paul Andreu. Construction started in December 2001 and the inaugural concert was held in December 2007. The exterior of the theater is a titanium accented glass dome that is completely surrounded by a man-made lake.
