DIY: Sea Urchin Scrubbie

(Sea Urchin Scrubbie via Girl on the Rocks)

"You know the kind that contain onions, potatoes, or California Cutie tangerines. I found that some are just the right size and elasticity to hold a yarn cake, but most couldn’t fill that job.
Probably because of my
recent fascination with tawashi (crochet and knit dish scrubbers) I thought of how much the mesh reminded me of nylon mesh pot scrubbers. So I decided to incorporate the plastic into knit and crochet scrubbers to increase their scrubbiness!

In order to knit or crochet with the mesh, I first cut it into a long, continuous, 1 inch wide strip by spiraling down the bags.

Since the mesh strips were pretty snaggy, I loosely wound them into balls.

I decided to adapt two free patterns for my use, but you could use this technique with any washcloth pattern. The patterns I chose are a knit (pdf download) and crochet version of a spiral scrubbie. The general idea is that you make a rhombohedron by increasing at one side and decreasing at the other side of your work (both increases and decreases are done on every row).
Then you sew together the cast on and bind off edges to make a short tube. Then you cinch the openings closed and it buckles down into a circular spiral.
Doesn’t it look like a little urchin?!

Details for my Sea Urchin scrubbieYarn: Peaches and Cream solid or other worsted weight 100% cotton yarn; Mesh strips.Needles: US#11 or US#12 or even larger if you knit tightly.
I held the yarn doubled along with the mesh strip.

Using yarn only cast on 10 sts.Row 1: Sl 1, knit front and back, knit 5, k2tog, k1Row 2: Sl 1, k2tog, knit 5, knit front and back, k1
Repeat rows 1-2 16 times (8 garter ridges). Cast off using yarn only. Using yarn only sew together cast on and bind off edges to make a tube with diagonal garter ribs. Cinch the top and bottom of the tube closed, and hide yarn and mesh ends inside the scrubbie."

Finish: Heat Sensitive Wallpaper

I remember as a child wishing that my parents would get the wallpaper from Willie Wonka...you know, the one that tasted like schnozberries, so that I could forever lick the wallpaper for yummy fruity flavors. Never, did I imagine another form of interactive wallpaper such as Shi Yuan's heat sensitive wallpaper. See the images before the radiator is turned on and after. It truly is inventive, fun and beautiful.

Etsy Lunch Hour: Grandpa

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend. I'm sure it was filled with plenty of grilling out, playing outdoors and rememberance. My grandfather passed on Memorial Day 11 years ago...so this time of year is a rememberance to him. He was a veteran, lost partial hearing due to cliff diving, a heavy smoker for years and only had partial use of one lung yet jumped rope with me once, and loved to fish and play/create crazy puzzles. My fondest memories with my grandpa were spent fishing with him out in Tampa Bay on his little boat. We would turn the motor off in certain areas where there were manatee warnings and go out into the bay with the sailboats, yachts, and dolphins. I loved growing up in Florida...there was something magical about it...the sunsets, the beaches, the birds, and the barefoot summers. Here's an ode to my grandpa and our Florida summers together!

Artist: Rania Hassan

Rania is a DC artist that I found on etsy as shoofly. What I loved the most about her work was the mix of mediums...knitting and painting. "She knits, paints, and gocco prints every surface imaginable with swirly tales of cherry swallowing, worm eating, arm doodling fun." is how she is described on her etsy profile. She has been featured on poppytalk, designsponge, craftzine, and many others. Okay, I will shut up now and let the work speak for itself! Check out her blog for more updates too!

Designer of the Week: George Nelson

I posted earlier in the week about George Nelson's swag leg desk which I adore. George Nelson and his design team have been responsible for some of my favorite design pieces of all time. Here's a little exerpt from Design Within Reach's biography:
"In 1946, Nelson became director of design at Herman Miller, a position he held until 1972. While there, Nelson recruited other seminal modern designers including Charles Eames and Isamu Noguchi. He also developed his own designs, including the Marshmallow sofa, the Nelson platform bench and the first L-shaped desk, a precursor to the present-day workstation. He also created a series of boldly graphic wall clocks, a series of bubble lamps made of self-webbing plastic and developed forward looking, occasionally futuristic concepts such as the "hidden city" of underground buildings designed to create a "more humane environment."Nelson felt that designers must be "aware of the consequences of their actions on people and society and thus cultivate a broad base of knowledge and understanding." Nelson himself certainly followed this principle. He was an early environmentalist, one of the first designers to take an interest in new communications technology and a powerful writer and teacher. Perhaps influenced by his friend, Buckminster Fuller, Nelson's ultimate goal as a designer was "to do much more with much less."

Finish: Marmoleum Flooring

I am a big fan of linoleum flooring.  Not only is it all natural, made from linseed oil, wood flour and burlap backing, but they are making linoleum so attractive these days....not like the ugly flooring from years ago.  Forbo Marmoleum flooring has the best selection of styles and colors.   Below is a fabulous marmoleum flooring project that I found via apartment therapy.

"(via apartment therapy) Here's the equivalent of home decor fried rice: Diary of a Vermont Eco Builder took all the Marmoleum leftover bits from their renovation projects, including from the bathrooms floors, bathroom counter tops and kitchen counter tops, and arranged the pieces altogether to create this beautiful patchwork kitchen floor...
In keeping with our eco design model, and just for the sheer fun of it, we’ve decided that the kitchen floor will be made up from all the leftover pieces of Marmoleum we’ve saved so far.
The first part was the installation of a high quality sub-floor (similar to the bathrooms), consisting of maple plywood and a lot of staples.
Then we mocked up some layouts on the computer (complete with correct colors and textures), and settled on the one below.

Architecture: Mullen Street House

This house is truly amazing.  I especially adore the tree growing through the center of the house.

Architect: Craig Steely

Mullen Street House

The quiet, sunny location of this difficult site generated a wholly unique arrangement of space, not typical to the city-- a San Francisco house where the main ideas expressed are transparency, sunlight, and a direct connection to nature. The house will integrate photovoltaic panels, a sod roof, and 25' timber bamboo growing through the house.

Etsy Lunch Hour: RV

When I was a kid, my grandparents would come visit us on their way in between Wisconsin and Florida. The coolest part was not just getting to see my grandparents, but was getting to hang out in their sweet RV. I was fascinated with the thought of traveling in your house! I always invisioned taking a nap in the bed while someone else drove or fixing a sandwhich in the kitchen or playing cards at the table. I know with gas prices being the way they are now, that many people are camping their campers and not traveling out on the open road. What about a hybrid RV or heck an all electric RV? Well, here's to the Etsy artists that love the RV as much as I.

Designer of the Week: Harry Bertoia

Harry Bertoia is one of my favorite designers. My husband has a good eye for finding things at thrift stores and spotted a pair of diamond chairs one day for $1.98 a piece! The covers on them were very ratty and torn, so we took them off and use the chairs in their basic wire form. My favorite chairs and thrift store find ever! Here's a little info on Bertoia that I found on DWR:
"Bertoia's career began in the 1930.s as a student at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where he re-established the metal-working studio and, as head of that department, taught from 1939 until 1943 when it was closed due to wartime restrictions on materials. During the war, Bertoia moved to Venice, California, and worked with Charles and Ray Eames at the Evans Products Company, developing new techniques for molding plywood.
All of his work bears the hallmarks of a highly skilled and imaginative sculptor, as well as an inventive designer, deeply engaged with the relationship between form and space."

Architecture: Eye Pod by Cermak Rhoades Architects

This is the most amazing camera obscura I have ever seen. Check out this post from Treehugger!
"From the architect's website: "When the University of Minnesota's Landscape Arboretum put out a call for entries for a collection of "Secret Gardens," inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett's well-known children's book, Chris Wegscheid had an idea that didn't include a single plant: build a body-sized camera obscura that would bring an ever-changing view of the arboretum into a secret indoor space."

"The camera is a walk-in box with a single glass lens that projects an image of the outdoor activity onto a big blank wall. It is among 20 Secret Gardens chosen for construction at the arboretum. Upon finishing it's stay at the arboretum, the Eye Pod will be headed for the Science Museum of Minnesota for placement as an outdoor exhibit."

Of course there will be some posts that I will throw in here and there that might not fit the format, but I feel like with structure I can be more creative. I hope you all will enjoy it!

Designers of the Week: Charles and Ray Eames

Ray & Charles Eames

LCW

Lounge chair & Ottoman

ESU

Case Study House

"The Eameses were a husband and wife team whose unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Sleek, sophisticated and simple. Beautifully functional. They adventurously pursued new ideas and forms with a sense of "serious fun." Yet, it was rigorous discipline that allowed them to achieve perfection of form and mastery over materials.

And they didn't stop with furniture. The Eameses also created a highly innovative "case study" house in response to a magazine contest. They made films, including a seven-screen installation at the 1959 Moscow World's Fair, presented in a dome designed by Buckminster Fuller. They designed showrooms, invented toys and generally made the world a more interesting place to be.As the most important exponents of organic design, Charles and Ray Eames demonstrated how good design can improve quality of life and human understanding and knowledge." Homemade Laundry Detergent

Apartment Therapy is one of my favorite every day sites that gives me tons of fun ideas. Today they posted about DIY Laundry Detergent...something I myself have recently started doing. Mine is a very simple solution of Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Hemp soap, baking soda, lemon juice and hot water. Now my clothes are clean and minty fresh. Dr. Bronner's also has a home cleaning detergent that you can use to mop, wash clothes and other things. I'm just partial to the peppermint and my mother (i mean santa claus) gets me a huge industrial sized gallon of the peppermint soap every Christmas.

(via apartmenttherapy)
"Sure, purchasing store laundry detergent is easy. But sometimes making something for yourself can be a satisfying project, even with the extra time and effort involved. And since the nearby 99 Cents Only Store carries almost everything listed here, we might have to try out this Instructables and offer the results as a gift for our friends (*cough* guinea pugs *cough*).
You will need:

  • Food processor

  • 1bar laundry soap like Fels Naptha or Zote, or Ivory - Zote can be found in hispanic grocery stores

  • 1 Box Borax - found in the laundry aisle

  • 1 box Washing Soda or Oxi Clean, orBaking soda - (Washing Soda AKA soda ash AKA sodium carbonate available in some grocery stores made by Arm and Hammer or you may find it art supply stores in the dyeing section)

OPTIONAL- essential oil of your choice, I didnt do it but I think tea tree might be nice.

Some recipe considerations, there are many variations to be found online.
'''Powdered Laundry Detergent'''1 Cup Grated Fels Naptha Soap, 1/2 Cup Washing Soda, 1/2 Cup Borax
For light load, use 1 Tablespoon. For heavy or heavily soiled load, use 2 Tablespoon "
