Here's another picture for kitchen inspiration. I like my blog to be like a scrapbook full of ideas that I one day want to do/own. This kitchen has the elements I am looking for...open shelves over the counters, flush base cabinets in a fun color, sleek modern appliances, no clutter, and a cool butcher block island! Orange 22 Botanist Flora End Table

From a single piece of aluminum is great beauty made: each item in the Botanist line from Orange22 starts with one piece of aluminum, cut and bent into shape, then either powdercoated or faced with a wood veneer. Sounds simple, but the results are stunning and evocative, with the Flora model's cutouts taking first prize for unexpected touches that make a world of difference.
The Botanist End Table can nest over the Botanist Cocktail Table to conceal magazines, remotes, etc. Suitable for indoor or outdoor use.

Designer of the Week: Eero Saarinen

Eero Saarinen is one of my favorite designers. Not only did he create wonderful modern classic pieces of furniture, but he created classic iconic architectural pieces such as the Gateway Arch.

"Saarinen began his career as a student at Yale University and after travels and studies in Europe returned to the U.S. and taught for a brief period at Cranbrook Academy. Cranbrook had been founded in 1927 by publisher George C. Booth and Eliel Saarinen, the latter of whom became Director in 1932. Two of its graduates were Charles Eames and Florence Knoll Bassett (then Schust). Saarinen and Eames collaborated on various projects, culminating in a range of furniture that won first prize at an exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1940 entitled, "Organic Design in Home Furnishings." After 1946, Eames went to work for Herman Miller, and Saarinen became associated with Knoll® Associates. A number of Saarinen's chairs for Knoll were to become landmarks in the history of 20th century design." (via DWR)

My friend Walt Creel is an amazing artist. He is the emerging artist at this years Magic City Art Connection which takes place this weekend April 25th-27th. His series of work "Deweaponizing the gun" creates art by shooting .22 caliber bullets into sheets of painted aluminum to create a pointillism effect with bullet holes and chipped paint. The Copenhagen Opera House

The Copenhagen Opera House is on my favorite list of architecture. The opera house opened in January of 2005, is 14 stories, has over 1000 rooms, and the main stage can hold approximately 1500 people.

The Copenhagen Opera House was designed by architect Henning Larsens Tegnestue www.hlt.dk

Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson created these three light sculptures that I adore.

Neuton Battery-Powered Mower at DWR

Neuton® Battery-Powered Mower
"The EPA estimates that of the 800 million gallons of gas used to fuel lawn mowers in the U.S. every year, about 17 million gallons are spilled, which can contaminate ground water. However, your “it’s bad for the environment” excuse for not mowing the lawn is about to end. The Neuton Battery-Powered Mower (2007) is a smart alternative to loud, gas-guzzling machines that are difficult to start. It runs on a rechargeable battery, and in place of a pull-cord, this mower starts by turning a safety knob and squeezing the handlebar. When the handlebar is released, the blade stops spinning. The Neuton Mower produces no CO2 emissions, and the 24-volt battery gives you enough juice to mow for 45 to 60 minutes, or approximately a third of an acre per charge. Included with the Mower are a Mulching Plug, Bagger, Side Discharge Chute, Battery and Battery Charger, Safety Key and two wrenches. There are no spark plugs or air filters to replace, and the Neuton never needs a tune up. The cutting height is adjustable, and if you’re still looking for an excuse for not mowing the lawn, here you go: Longer grass tends to have a deeper root system, and needs less water than shorter grass." Green Guitars from First Act

So, I love guitars and have been trying to learn how to play them since Christmas. Yes, it is a long and gruesome process for someone who has never played a stringed instrument. But, it is fun and I dream about which electric guitar I will get when I get good enough to move up from my acoustic. Here's an option for the environmentally conscious.
(repost from
DESIGNwatcher)
"The body of the guitar is crafted from Forest Stewardship Council certified wood, nearly all of the hardware and electronics are made from recycled or salvaged parts—even the exterior finish and paint were chosen for their low toxin emission. Additionally, the carbon emissions associated with electrifying the guitar for its entire lifetime will be made "carbon neutral" through renewable energy company,
Native Energy. Check out Garnder's custom guitar and First Act's earth-friendly bamboo guitar ($399) right here."

Shipping Container Children's Activity Center

I found this awesome article about reusing shipping containers for architecture on thecoolhunter. Below are a few snippets of the article.

"Phooey Architects completed work on Skinners Playground, a backyard for children living in public housing in South Melbourne, Australia – and a low cost, environmentally sound, and socially responsible solution.

Beginning with the desire to produce zero waste from conception to completion, Phooey architects staggered, sliced and arranged four unpainted shipping containers on the site of the playground. Any additional material including windows, decking, carpet tiles and joinery had to be durable, recycled, reclaimed, reused, plantation or salvaged from demolition. Even parts that were cut off or unassembled from the containers were used to make a staircase with a balustrade, overhangs providing external shading, and various decorative features."

Open shelves in the kitchen

I love the look of having open shelves in the kitchen instead of upper cabinets. I think it eliminates that terrible clutter that we can be guilty of behind closed cabinet doors, opens the entire room up and balances the room better. The heavy elements are closest to the ground and they get lighter as the room goes up.

Red Bull Office!

Number 2 on deputydog's list of 10 annoyingly brillian office interiors is red bull. Can I live in this modern haven?

"2. red bull - designed by jump studios

ironically, the red bull headquarters’ offices resemble a workspace designed by a human recently injected in the spine with the energy drink. everything about this place is shiny, smooth, angular and slightly manic and there’s even an effort-negating slide connecting floors for the lazy bastards who forgot to drink their regulation can of the good stuff in the morning."

Pixar's office

deputydog did an amazing article "10 annoyingly brilliant office interiors". Here is the first of the list...Pixar's office. Here's what the article had to say:

"1. pixar - designed by bohlin cywinski jackson

for the pixar staff to work in a space anything other than brilliant would’ve been an immense shock. i can’t imagine the team churning out films like the incredibles whilst sitting on a collapsable plastic chair, colleagues fighting over the only pritt-stick in the room. the staff don’t have normal cubicles to work in, rather wooden cabins full of comfortable furniture and gentle lighting. the whole place looks extremely comfortable and, more importantly, productive."

Adam Gordon's Jane Street Townhouse

"Gordon's architect, Steven Harris used some local materials to cut down on cost: glass from upstate New York and marble direct from a quarry in Vermont. We think the smartest move was adding a fifth floor on the roof. While the building permit wouldn't allow them to add new square footage, by removing the extension on the rear of the house, Harris was able to deploy that usable square footage to the roof!
The story, including before and after pictures are at New York Magazine: This Became That. If the pictures from New York's slideshow aren't enough, there are even more at Steven Harris Architects (look under residential projects, 92 Jane Street Townhouse).

Hotel Fox!

This is my very favorite hotel...the Hotel Fox in Denmark! Each room is specially designed by a different artist. Here are just a few of my favorite rooms!

312. Yume
"Imagining dreams. Chisato’s inspiration came from her homeland of Hokkaido in the north of Japan: “There is a lot of nature and countryside there. There are four distinct seasons to the year and there is a lot of snow in winter. – ‘Yume’ means dream in Japanese. I hope that you dream your own story when you sleep in this room, inspired by the wallpaper that I drew. Have a wonderful dream.”

317. Monday
"Idea, colour and space. Kim’s rooms for Hotel FOX are his first venture into interiors: “I wanted to try and make psychological rooms as much as physical ones. To make rooms as stage sets. To make rooms that I hadn't seen before”. Hiorthøy hopes that guests will respond to his rooms either with irritation or enthusiasm; “both are good”, he says: “Welcome. Please be quiet when entering. Don't spill.”

121. Sleep Seasons
"Safe comfort. Each of Rinzen’s rooms has its own concept: “The Sleep Season room was inspired by the desire to hibernate (really!). It creates a cosy nook filled with animals sleeping through the seasons of the year. As the year passes, the animals sleep, blissfully unaware of their surroundings. A family of bears huddle around a winter tree, while a gorilla dreams in the freshness of spring. Out to sea, gigantic whales bask on summer waves and the autumn winds play havoc with hedgehogs and owls.”

Indoor Sundial: The Bulbdial Clock

(repost from ironic sans)
"I think we can all agree that sundials pretty much suck. They only have an hour hand, they don’t work at night or indoors, their accuracy changes with the seasons, and if you happen to live in the Southern hemisphere they run backwards. And yet, we all would love to be able to tell the time by looking at shadows, right?
That’s why I’ve come up with the Bulbdial Clock.
The Bulbdial Clock has no hands — just one pole in the center of the clock, and three light sources of varying heights which revolve around the pole casting shadows. In the model illustrated above, the light sources are each attached to a ring which rotates around the pole. The innermost ring rotates once per minute, casting a “second hand” shadow. The middle ring rotates once per hour, and casts the “minute hand” shadow. And the outer ring rotates once every 12 hours, casting the “little hand” shadow.
The Bulbdial Clock can be used flat like a traditional sundial, or mounted vertically on a wall. A variation on the design intended for large-scale installation (such as in a museum) involves a pole sticking up in the middle of a room, while the light sources are mounted on the ceiling, shining down on the pole as they rotate around it.
The Bulbdial Clock solves most of the sundial’s problems, but it still has a problem of its own: It doesn’t work in bright light. So the Bulbdial Clock is best suited for dim spaces such as restaurants and nightclubs."
